Short Bio IN ENGLISH:
MAYRA CUEVAS is the award-winning author of books and stories for readers of all ages. Her young adult novel Does My Body Offend You? (co-written with Marie Marquardt) was long-listed for the PEN/Faulkner Award, named a 2023 Book All Young Georgians Should Read, a New York Public Library Best Books for Teens 2022 and a Target YA Book Club selection. In 2023, she was named Georgia Author of the Year in the Young Adult category. Mayra’s debut picture book My Abuela is a Bruja/Mi Abuela es una Bruja is scheduled for a dual release in English and Spanish on August 12, 2025. Her debut adult romance How to Fake a Southern Gentleman (co-written with Marie Marquardt) is scheduled for a Spring 2026 release. Mayra is also the author of the teen foodie romcom Salty, Bitter, Sweet, and the short story “Resilient,” published as part of the anthology Foreshadow: The Magic of Reading and Writing YA. Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Mayra is a former award-winning CNN producer, where she worked for almost 20 years. She is now a creative writing visiting professor for City University of New York’s MFA program. Mayra is also the co-founder of the Latinx Kidlit Book Festival and its Latinx Storytellers Conference. In 2024, the book festival received an emerging strategies honor from the Library of Congress. Mayra believes in the power of stories to change lives and the right of all students to have access to diverse books in the classroom. She is also passionate about teaching writers of all ages how to craft and publish their own stories. Mayra keeps her sanity by practicing Modern Buddhism and meditation. MAYRA CUEVAS es la autora galardonada de libros e historias para lectores de todas las edades. Su novela para adolescentes Does My Body Offend You? (coescrita con Marie Marquardt) fue preseleccionada para el premio PEN/Faulkner, nombrada Libro que Todos los Jóvenes del Estado de Georgia Deberían Leer en 2023, Mejores Libros para Adolescentes de la Biblioteca Pública de Nueva York en 2022 y una selección del Target YA Book Club. En 2023, Mayra fue nombrada Autora del Año del Estado de Georgia en la categoría de adolescentes. Su primer libro para niños My Abuela is a Bruja/Mi Abuela es una Bruja, será publicado en inglés y español el 12 de agosto de 2025. Su primera novela para adultos How to Fake a Southern Gentleman (coescrita con Marie Marquardt) lanza en la primavera de 2026. Mayra también es autora de la comedia romántica gastronómica para adolescentes Salty, Bitter, Sweet y del cuento “Resilient,” publicado como parte de la antología Foreshadow: The Magic of Reading and Writing YA. Nacida y criada en Puerto Rico, Mayra es una ex productora galardonada de CNN, donde trabajó durante casi 20 años. Hoy Mayra es profesora visitante de escritura creativa para el programa MFA de la City University of New York.
